This is the only photo I have of Dad, Mike and me. Mom took the picture. She was always the one with the camera.
I don’t like the picture. It’s too stark.
It doesn’t show Dad chasing us around the yard, the piggyback rides, the hugs and kisses, the unexpected gifts, or the love.
That’s what I remember most, the love. Not when Mom was sick in the hospital, or when Dad was out of work, or when the fire took everything, but this photo.
Mom made us breakfast every morning; we never had cereal.
We ate dinner together every night and shared our day.
Mom and Dad took turns coming into my bedroom, and into Mike’s, to tuck us in and kiss us goodnight.
I’m the only one left. Me and this photograph.
Don’t be sad. I remember the love.
I across many people who fail to realize how fortunate they are that they have good, loving families. I’m so glad to hear that you are not one of those people. You may not be able to hold memories in your hands like you can a photograph, but memories tell the truth more than any picture.
Your dad was a very handsome man. And I love your little pink dress!
Thanks for the sentiment, but this is fiction. A writing challenge from WordPress. Click on the first line of this post and it will bring you to the challenge.
Heartwarming story.. Well told in such less words!
Just out of curiosity though, did you pick the photo of the previous challenge to write the story upon as the pic for this challenge is different?
WP suggested to use a previous picture. I almost turned it down, but my brain had other ideas. I’m glad it did.
