Lydia’s visiting neighbor was standing by the sliding door looking outside. “What’s Mattie doing?”

“She’s pretending to be Daddy,” Lydia said.

“And why does her father do?”

“In layman’s’ terms, he splices genes and puts them back together.”

“That would explain it,” the neighbor said.

Lydia moved to stand next to her friend to see what her daughter was doing. “Oh my,” she said.

The backyard was full of animal parts and stuffing. On the picnic table was a saw, Lydia’s sewing box, and a newly formed stuffed creature.

Lydia sighed. “I guess she truly is her father’s daughter.”
