Another Dystopian Science Fiction
My good friend Cassandra Amesley is writing her version of a dystopian science fiction novel. But her disaster influences three different planets where the natural order of things is on the verge of crumbling. When one planet is fixed it affects the health of the other two.
If you like science fiction with a little magic mixed in, you’ll like this one.
She is posting the novel Mirim’s Gates on her blog.
Mirim is the main character who creates a portal, or gate, to another planet with magic. The gods have called him to save the universe, he’d rather find a nice place to hide out. The gods have also provide him with a team of people from the three planets to help him fulfill his mission.
She’s starting the story with some background information of the characters and their perspective worlds. Of the three worlds, one is Earth, one is peaceful (or so they say), and one is warrior world (though not all are in agreement to a perpetual war).

Now that sounds interesting, and it reminds me of something a friend and I were talking about. He asked what good was it for people to colonize other planets (i.e. Mars, Ganymede, Rhea, Enceladus, etc) if we can’t solve our problems here on Earth. I suggested that perhaps Earth was the problem. We suffer from the holy trinity of overpopulation, economic underdevelopment and environmental degradation. Trying to fix any one of these threatens to worsen the other two. So what do you do? I have to ask her if she was thinking something similar when she wrote this. Probably not, but I’m keen on proving that psychic convergence is possible 😉
I’m not sure what she was thinking. I do know that she want’s to finish and have people loving it.

Colonizing in fiction is one thing, but colonizing for real when we are such a messed up people… I see your friend’s point.
But at the same time, should we stop? I don’t think so.
We colonize for the same reason we climb mountains – It’s there and we have to conquer it. It’s part of Mankind’s adventurous spirit. We have to or die inside.
Conquering comes in all sizes. For me it’s finding a new bike path or finally publishing a novel. I’ll never go to space.
When we do colonize, we’ll bring our problem’s with us, but we’ll also bring the best of our selves.
