Friday Fictioneer: How Carp Got Their Color

She was dingy brown, the color of mud and was shunned by all. No one saw the magnificent heart of a heroine.

One day swimming in her pond, she saw a small fairy drifting, as if dead. She gently carried her to shore. Carp swam too far inland and got stuck on land.

The fairy opened her eyes as Carp was gasping her last. She spoke one word of magic, “Koi.”

Carp woke safe in her pond.

But magic has a habit of doing more than asked.

That spring Carp’s eggs hatched, everyone was brightly colored. She named them Koi.
