Friday Fictioneer: Old Joe

PHOTO PROMPT © Ted Strutz
“Remember old Joe?”
“That happy old timer who was always looking for the next big deal? He must have lost thousands.”
“Well, he chased after so many of them he finally made it rich.”
“No.”
“Yeah.”
“How much?”
“Some $500,000.”
“At his age, that’s more than enough for him to live on until he dies.”
“Not really.”
“What?”
“He spend it on a land deal in the swamps.”
“You’ve got to be kidding. That guy is an idiot.”
“Not really.”
“What?”
“They’re going to build a city. They’re going to call it Miami. Old Joe is now worth $5 Million.”

Hey good for Old Joe. Is that how Miami was really founded or what?
I think so, yes. It was both promising and considered the worse place to build. I’m sure there were many who regretted not getting in on the ground floor.
thanks for reading, Phyllis
Swampland seems like a horrible place to build, and look what happened. I’ve never been to Miami, but I’ve heard bad things.
I used to have a character named Old Joe. He was named after a character named Old Joe.
Old Joe. Yes. A middle aged character named Joe did inspire me. He was always chasing after the next big deal, but for the comic element, he never succeeded. He was Mexican, I didn’t want to offend by calling him that Mexican guy, so my character became Old Joe. Maybe they’re related.
Mine came from Charles Dickens. I made an audiobook of A Christmas Carol for my grandfather. I had fun with the voice I did for Old Joe, so I made my own character out of it.
Cool. Mdke an audio was a labor of love. I bet your grandfather loved it.
Wow. One pay off after another.
WOW. Thank you. ;0)
Well, if Manhattan was bought for a handful of beads, I guess this could happen 🙂
Ha. ;0)
Old Joe came good in the end!
If only we all could.
This was great, Phyllis! Never give up, they say…
So true.
It just proves that taking risks can pay off – sometimes!
M<y tale – An audience with Rosey!
So true. Even old dreamers can sometimes get it right.
Having lived in Florida off & on since the mid 60’s and seen the unbelievable growth, this hit home. Good job!

I read your Eat More Bear. Cut.
I would nave left a message but your subscription was in the way. I was unable to close it down.
Argh, will have to look at that. I’m new to Mailerlite and still playing with it. Thanks!
I see I wrote cut, you knew I meant cute. ;0)
I’m on a friend’s computer and it’s doing strange things. It may be my friend’s computer that was the problem.
Sounds like one of those Paul Harvey “the rest of the story…” if you know who Paul Harvey is. Good one.
Yes I do, and thank you for the compliment.
You are welcome.
Amazing story. I guess such things do happen – just not to me unfortunately.
Or me. :0(
Not an idiot after all. Nice build to a wonderful ending! =)
Thanks. ;0)
Old Joe never sat on his money. He invested and reinvested and made his millions. A gambler at heart.
So true. Thanks for reading.
