Friday Fictioneer: Colorado Mountain

PHOTO PROMPT © Sandra Crook
“Where is this train going again?”
“Town of Silver Springs, abandoned silver mine now a tourist town.”
“Okay.”
“What are you doing?”
“It’s 8 in the morning in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. I’m cold so I’m wearing my wool poncho.”
“You will be the only one dressed for winter. It’s summer.”
“I don’t care I’m cold.”
“You’ll have to carry it with you all day.”
“I don’t care, I’m cold now.”
“Find. Whatever.”
It was a lovely summer day, on the top of the mountain where it was 40F.
And I was the only one who was warm. ;0)

True story. The conversation isn’t exactly correct, but I was the only one prepared for that day.

I don’t know what temperature 40F is but I’m guessing it’s chilly. It pays to be prepared. I always carry extra with me – especially if I’m up a mountain!
In America 40 degrees fahrenheit, 40F.
In most of the rest of the world, is celsius or 4C.
Either way, yes it is chilly.
Yep, can be cool in the mountains… Silver Springs or Silverton? I always wanted to take the Darango-Silverton train through the mountains.
Go for it. It is a beautiful ride.
But you might want to bring goggles or wrap around sun glasses to keep the cinders from the burning coal out of your eyes. And bring a jacket with you just in case.
Oh! don’t forget to have fun. ;0)
I didn’t think of the cinders from the coal… My next trip to Colorado keeps being pushed back, but I do know I want to go to that area, most likely going to or from Mesa Verde. Perhaps a train ride would be in order 🙂
Sounds good to me. ;0)
Smart to bring the wool poncho up the mountain, even when encouraged not to! Nicely written piece!
Thanks. I can be a bit stubborn sometimes. And sometimes it pays off. ;0)
Smart one! I always carry a jacket when hiking, even if it’s triple digit temps… just in case. Often have a blanket roll and a pack full of water, too. Never enter the wilds unprepared is a good motto to keep. Oh, and stay away from the wildlife.
You’re the smart one.
I don’t usually venture too far into the wild off the trails, but you’re right, always be prepared.
I always carry a jacket, water, flint/steel, and a good knife when I hike. I fell once, years ago, from a cliff and was there for many hours until someone came…I was prepared then so my finder was more worried than I was, and ever since then, I’m always prepared.
WOW. I almost fell of a cliff. My boyfriend grabbed me just in time and pulled me back. Might be best for me to keep this in mind next time I go hiking.
I’m glad you were recused and are okay.
My foster dad came, took one look at me, shook his head and said “That’s my Girl.” Then, he splinted my ankle with some branches and I hobbled out a mile to the car. Didn’t stop me for long, I was back as soon as I healed climbing the same cliff, Foster Dad standing below watching.
You’ve got a good Faster Dad. He didn’t yell at you, but encouraged you to back at it. Good for you for getting back at it.
Oh, he yelled…about me being late for curfew. He was one of the best “dad”s I had back then.
Nice to know when you are loved.
Yes, it is… and in my youth was all to rare.
Dear Phyllis,
It pays to be prepared. Nicely done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thank you, my dear. ;0)
Blessings,
Phyllis
Who is laughing now? Why is it there are always those who mock the prepared ones?
Fun take.
Thanks.
This reminds me of my friend. She is always cold. I tease her about wearing sweaters to work in the summer when it’s 90+. “They have the air conditioner on so high that I freeze all day.”
Bummer for her.
Thanks for coming by. ;0)
My sentiment too, keep a warm coat handy at all times.
Yes, sir. ;0)
I love it when that happens 🙂
Me too. ;0)
It pays to be prepared. As I’m fond of saying to anyone who will listen – it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Good story.
Brilliant. I say the same thing. Ha.
People who are visionaries, as you were, are always ridiculed for their choices and points of view. In the end, it is they who have the last laugh, as you did.
I like this. Thanks.
Gotta be prepared!
Just so. ;0)
