Friendly Friday Photo Challenge: Night

This week Friendly Friday Photo Challenge is night.

Here is my entry: Washington Bridge

Short history:

Washington Bridge crosses over the Mississippi River just north of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

It first opened in November 1967.

It collapsed into the Mississippi River August 1, 2007. Thirteen people died that day.

I heard several stories of how people just missed being on the bridge.

Jim and his wife got lost in the neighborhood south and east of the bridge, otherwise they would have been on the bridge heading home.

After work, Vong often played soccer south of the bridge. He would have been on his way home when the Washington Bridge collapsed. But that day, he decided to play soccer with a different team closer to home.

Because winters can be extreme in Minnesota, all road construction stops. Washington Bridge is on Interstate 35West, and is a vital part of freeway traffic through and into Minneapolis. Therefore winter did not stop construction and the bridge was rebuilt within a year.
